Mixing up my workouts

I make sure to do some push ups, squats and lunges.

My parents were both avid runners. They competed in marathons and long distance races all across the country. They never worried about winning. They weren’t training for the Olympics or anything like that. My parents enjoyed the run. That’s how they met and it was something they like to do together. Because of my parents, I developed a love of running as well. It remains my favorite way to work out. For a while, however, I put way too much stress on my joints and feet. I had some problems with pain in my knees and plantar fasciitis. I needed to find ways to workout that were less damaging. I realized that I needed to mix up my workout routine. Since I didn’t quite know what to do with myself, I joined a gym. I hoped that I’d enjoy using the equipment. The gym offers a wide selection of options that go easy on the joints and feet. In-between running, I am able to still get a good cardio workout by using the elliptical or stationary bike. I can get my heart pumping, burn calories and use my muscles in a different way. There’s no jarring impact on my knees and feet. I also like to use weight training machines. There are machines to target specific muscles in the shoulders, biceps, triceps, back and chest. I can even work my inner and outer thighs, butt and calves. I’ve recently started lifting free weights and become more serious about sit ups and ab crunches. I make sure to do some push ups, squats and lunges. Since adding in more variety of exercises to my workouts, I’m in better overall shape. I’ve increased strength and stamina. It helps to prevent injury and allows me to run faster and more often.
